Manufacturers restrict the performance of their engines because they generally sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations, different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity, etc. The engine still has to be able to perform to their high standards even when drivers don’t pay attention to advised service schedules and use poor quality fuels.
In some ways a normal ECU map is a “best fit” - so by removing some of the polar extremes in the cars mapping we can refine it’s performance and economy. So you get a better performing vehicle and you save money!
